Prior removal, Kunal praised BJP's Tapas Roy: "worthy candidate"
India's national football team, captained by Sunil Chhetri, has made an impressive climb to the top-100 of the FIFA Rankings for the first time in five years.
The team's ranking improved from 101 to 100, marking their entry into the coveted top-100 bracket. This achievement comes as a result of India's commendable performance in the ongoing SAFF Championship.
Under Chhetri's leadership, India began their campaign in the SAFF Championship with a dominant 4-0 victory over Pakistan, followed by a 2-0 win against Nepal. In their final Group A match, India secured a 1-1 draw against Kuwait, finishing second in their group with seven points from three matches.
Currently unbeaten in all nine matches played in 2023, India's unbeaten run stretches back nearly four years on home soil. Their last defeat came in Guwahati against Oman in September 2019 during the FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Chhetri, who has been in scintillating form, is currently the tournament's leading goalscorer with five goals.
India's upcoming challenge lies in the SAFF Championship semi-finals, where they will face Lebanon at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium on July 1. In the other semi-final, Kuwait will take on Bangladesh. With their recent climb in the FIFA Rankings, India has surpassed Lebanon and New Zealand.
Chhetri expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, acknowledging the tough competition provided by Kuwait. Although disappointed with conceding a late goal in their match against Kuwait, Chhetri highlighted the importance of maintaining their unbeaten streak and expressed the team's determination to extend it further.
